My mother and father used to tell me about watching the overhead dogfights. Probably more poignant for my father as both of his brothers were in the RAF as ground crew.
My late dad came from kings wood ulcome and when he use to go home to visit as he was driving he would point to different fields and woods saying mess 109 in there Heinkel there spitfire in there ect ect wish he dad drawn a map of it all. As children he and his brother and sister use to watch the dog fights and most were so high you literally just saw the vapour trails of the planes but they could also hear the rat a tat tat of the guns and ping ping ping as spent shells landed on their houses roof. Amazing times.
